To blow one’s nose is to expel mucus or other matter from one’s nasal passages, via one’s nostril, by force of lung power. (Definition from en.wiktionary.org).
When your nose get stuffy, the amount of oxygen reaching your lungs is reduced. Blowing your nose helps you get rid of the excess mucus in your nasal passages. This provides more room for inhaling air in your lungs and you will breath normally.
Blowing your nose once in a while is okay. However, it is still not considered a brilliant solution to the stuffy nose. This is because it puts pressure on the nasal cavities and makes mucus clog up the sinuses.
People tend to blow their noses more frequently when they catch a cold. Dr. Neil Schachter, a medical director of the Respiratory Care Department of Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York and author of ‘The Good Doctor’s Guide to Colds and Flu‘ recommends that, “If you catch a cold, control the symptoms with antihistamines rather than decongestants, which can increase blood pressure or have a rebound effect.”
Better still, he encourages the use of hand sanitizers containing alcohol to get rid of the cold germs. He terms this as the “number one helper in cold prevention.”
Pinching of the nose as you blow is highly discouraged. It makes you use even greater force and pressure, which has negative effects. You should blow through the nostrils: one at a time.
